Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Here are five signs they need attention — and what each one means.
Brakes don't fail all at once — they warn you. The problem is that most drivers don't know what to listen or feel for. Catching brake problems early is the difference between a pad replacement and a rotor replacement. Here are the five most common warning signs.
1. Squealing or Squeaking
Brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to squeal when the pads get thin. If you hear a high-pitched squeal when you apply the brakes, that's the indicator doing its job. Don't ignore it. You typically have a little time, but weeks, not months.
Note: some light squealing on first use in the morning, especially after rain, is normal. The squeal that matters is consistent and gets worse over time.
2. Grinding
Grinding means the pad is gone and metal is contacting metal. This damages your rotors rapidly — what would have been a $200 pad replacement is now a $400+ rotor and pad job. If you hear grinding, get it looked at immediately.
3. Vibration or Pulsing When Braking
If the steering wheel shakes or the brake pedal pulses when you slow down, your rotors are likely warped. Warping happens from heat cycles — common in Utah's mountain roads and canyon driving where you brake repeatedly on long descents. Warped rotors reduce braking effectiveness and should be resurfaced or replaced.
4. Pulling to One Side
If your vehicle pulls left or right when you brake, one caliper may be sticking or one side's pads may be more worn than the other. This is both a brake problem and a safety hazard — uneven braking in an emergency can cause loss of control.
5. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal
A brake pedal that sinks too far before engaging, or feels mushy, usually indicates air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak. This is a serious safety issue. If your pedal feels wrong, don't drive the vehicle — have it towed or call us.
